The 'By Design' Grant - Are You Eligible

It’s not often something comes along that really needs to be shouted about, but the Scottish Enterprise ‘By Design’ Grant is certainly one of those things.

If you are even remotely interested in getting some design work done then this grant could be for you with a possible contribution between £2,000 and £5,000 towards the design of new or existing products and services. There are criteria that your business must fall into but with the prospect of FREE design there’s no excuse…find out more and see if you’re eligible!

What can it be used for?

This grant can be used to support the design of a new product or service, including:

  • Sampling or Minimal Viable Product Design
  • Service design or manufacture ready design
  • Formulation trials and focus groups
  • Recipe development
  • Packaging, prototyping or tooling

Branding can be covered by the grant but must be part of a bigger innovation project with other design costs in the application.

Designing a website can be included, as long as the website is part of the bigger innovation project and web design costs do not exceed 10% of the total eligible project costs.

You can’t use it for:
  • Travel costs or internal training costs
  • Capital expenditure, including ICT hardware
  • Ongoing maintenance contracts or contractors outwith the EU
  • Salary costs or staff recruitment costs, including the design or placement of recruitment adverts
  • Printing costs, such as brochures or leaflets
  • Software for your business, such as office software or operating system licences
  • Printing and production costs for marketing collateral
Can I apply for this grant?

You can apply for the By Design grant if you’re:

  • A small to medium-sized VAT registered business or social enterprise in Scotland looking to use design to develop a new product or service.
  • Able to contribute at least 30% of the cost
  • Able to fund the project up-front
  • Able to demonstrate the benefits of the project

By exception, non-VAT registered applicants may be considered if they have pre-approval for a VAT exemption via their Business Gateway adviser.

This grant is not for you if you have:
  • Received, or are receiving, funding from Scottish Enterprise or any other public sector body for the same project
  • Are a Scottish Enterprise account managed company or Business Gateway Growth Pipeline company
  • Previously received a Make it to Market or By Design support within the last 36 months

By exception, non-VAT registered applicants may be considered if they have pre-approval for a VAT exemption via their SE Innovation Adviser.
